Songs for the Sorrowful – Adult Lent Bible Study 2018

    When

    Sundays, February 25 – April 22 at 9:15 am

    Where

    Church Fellowship Hall

    What

Sorrow can flood into our life at any given moment.  It comes from loss – of life, of dreams, of control, of relationship.

Lent is the public way that we Christians deal with sorrow and grief, because it draws us into the suffering of our savior.  He bound himself to us, unto death.  He knows our weakness as human, and yet he has provided a solution.

Among the most emotive writers in Scripture, King David produced thousands of songs, many of which are recorded in Scripture as Psalms.  During this time of sorrow as we watch Jesus walk the road of our suffering, his penitential Psalms can talk to us and teach us how faith sees the journey to the cross.

Child care will be provided for ages 0-3.  Sunday School is available for all other ages.

    Call Meeting

There will be a call meeting on Sunday, March 11, 2018 after the 10:30 am service.

For Lent 3 – Think ahead for next week –   Our Compassionate High Priest

We have a High Priest who cares for us—Jesus is not only able to sympathize with us in our weakness; he is able to strengthen us also.  Having been tempted as we are, Jesus can deal gently with us.  He understands the influence that sinful desires have over us.  Look at how gently the Savior dealt with Simon Peter when he denied Jesus. Jesus looked at him and indicated that he had heard Simon’s denial but invited him to confess and find mercy. He can and will do the same for us.

    New This Week – February 18, 2018

For Lent 2 – Think ahead for next week

Our Perfect High Priest  – Jesus is the perfect High Priest—true God and true man in one person. We confess how that happened: “Conceived by the Holy Spirit . . .” There was no room for progress from imperfection to perfection. Jesus was perfect already in every way. But then how could Christ, as perfect God and man, plead as he did in the garden for the cup of suffering to be taken away? How can the writer of Hebrews say that Christ “learned obedience”? Answer: He humbled himself to put himself in our place.

The PLAN – Adult Special Lent Bible Study

According to an old adage, one should not lose sight of the forest for the trees, but what does this mean?  When we get so caught up in the details of life we may forget how God planned – from the beginning – to save us.  He put his answer to sin up on a tree, which was carved into a cross.  God promised and he has delivered us by the sacrificial offering of his own Son. Through the lens of our GOD’S WAYS Study, this review will help you grasp the big picture of salvation.   Arrange your own schedule – come in February or March, on Mondays or Tuesdays.  February 19 & 27; March 13 & 19 at 7pm.  All are invited. Call the church office for info (262)377-6363.

February and March – SENIOR ADULT BIBLE STUDY Book of 2 Peter

The people to whom Peter wrote this letter were experiencing Satan’s attacks on their faith. They needed encouragement to continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of their Savior, even as we do today. The epistle of 2 Peter reminds us of the victory we have through Christ. The class is taught by Staff Minister Hering in the Church Office Classroom on Tuesdays at 10:30 am. The current session will continue through March 20th(more…)

    February 18, 2018 Prayers

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 )

There were few houses left on the rural road to the church. Once part of a prosperous farming community, it had served a large congregation. Now the road ended near the cemetery. County officials had erected a large sign: DEAD END. The sign generated moments of laughter, and some of deep thought. Perhaps that sign should be placed in every cemetery as a reminder of St. Paul’s words … the wages of sin is death … (Romans 6:23a).

God’s perfect law demands perfect obedience. The life of each sinner is a dead end. Thank God those words are not the end of the verse. St. Paul goes on to write, … the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our  Lord (Romans 6:23b).

Jesus’ willing sacrifice on the cross has given us a free gift with no fine print included — eternal life in a heavenly home filled with unspeakable joy.

    From the Board of Stewardship

God rescued the Israelites from their bondage and mistreatment from the Egyptians.  He was concerned about their suffering, and He showed His compassion by rescuing them. To help them to remember His goodness to them, God commanded that His people take some of the firstfruits of the produce that God had given them and put them into a basket to give to the priests to place on the Lord’s altar (Deuteronomy 26). The firstfruits were brought to the Lord in thankful response to what He had done for them. In the same way that God provided for His people in the Old Testament, He provides for us today. Especially as we begin this Lenten season we witness anew how God provided for us by sending His Son, Jesus, to suffer and die for us. How are you showing your gratitude and love to God through your “firstfruits?”

“ … the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”  2 Timothy 4:6b-7

When the Apostle Paul was facing the end of his earthly days, his words reflected his life in the Christian faith. Fighting the good fight, finishing the race, and keeping the faith pointed to a life of fulfillment as a Christ-follower.

These same Christian markers summarize the lives of faithful Christians today who are facing their last earthly hours and serve as reminders of the Lord’s faithfulness in their lives. Christian believers know that the Lord Who helped them keep the faith through Word and Sacrament during their earthly run will be there when they cross the finish line of this life. Crossing that line, they collapse in the arms of Jesus, the Finisher of faith and Giver of everlasting life. As Christian believers we encourage one another with these reminders of God’s past faithfulness and the assurance of His promise,

Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10b).

Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness … 2 Timothy 4:8a

All it takes is construction paper, scissors, paste, and a few glue-on sequins to make a fairly serviceable crown. Remember doing that as a child? Once finished it was worn proudly to proclaim the wearer as king or queen of the realm!

Though born King of Kings, Jesus never wore even a paper crown, much less a real one fashioned in gold and studded with jewels. Instead, He was given a crown of thorns in a mocking nod to His sovereignty, and He willingly bore the torment. Why? So each of us could wear His crown of righteousness! His is not a paper crown like one we might make, or even a royal crown of fantastic worth. His is the glorious crown of being right with God. This is the crown He was born to give us.

Jesus, King of Kings, calls us to come to Him in faith — faith in His birth, death, and resurrection. He invites us to kneel before Him as He crowns us “right with God” now and for eternity. (more…)
