    August Sermon Series

Isn’t summertime, sunshine and the green growth in Wisconsin amazing?  From the rain and rays (actually, from the Creator) comes a growing plant. As summer progresses we witness the cycle of life, from start to finish, from little to big, from seed to fruit.  This same cycle occurs in the life of a believer, as faith is planted by the Gospel, it is watered and nurtured and then comes the abundant fruit.  God loves to gather his children together and raise a garden of good things.  Seeing this cycle reminds us that we can’t rush the process by which fruit appears in our lives.

    Love Lifts Us Up

Summer Sunday Adult Bible Study.  August 11 – September 8th at 9:15am each Sunday in the Fellowship Hall.  Our English language is complicated by context – especially when it comes to love. We use the same word to describe our passion for food (tacos or hamburgers), our adoration (worship) for God, the attraction and affection between a husband and wife. While we simply have one word for love, the ancient Greeks used several, all of which are illustrated in Scripture.  In this late summer study we’ll discover why love is central to all aspects of life and how having love lifts up our spirits.  John says it so well, “We love because he first loved us.”  “God is love.”  “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.”

    Attention Parents!

A 10-week parenting Bible class entitled “Family Balance” will be taught by Tom Hering and begin on Sunday, September 8.  This series is for all parents. There are many aspects of trying to find and maintain balance in a family. This discussion-based class will include Biblical principles and guidance to help work through the challenges of family balance on many different fronts, such as the use of Law/Gospel, discipline, technology, worship, family time, work and play, etc. The class will meet in the classroom off the fellowship hall during the regular Sunday morning Bible class hour. August 11th Prayers

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.  Proverbs 27:9 (NIV)

Many smells are pleasing to the senses: freshly-baked bread, newly-mown grass, coffee brewing early in the morning, lilacs in the spring. Aromatherapy oils and lotions have a calming effect and help us to relax. Proverbs 27:9 compares the aroma of perfume to the sweet advice of a good friend — a friend with whom we can share anything. One who listens and loves us enough to give sound advice. That’s the kind of friend God instructs us to be: one who nurtures lasting friendships with love and prayers and gives God-pleasing advice, a friend whose presence is as sweet as the aroma of lilacs in the spring. Love must be sincere. Be devoted to one another in love (Romans 12:9a, 10a NIV). Have I remembered to thank my friends for their sound advice?

Special education task force – Heavenly Father, thank you for blessing us with schools that provide a high-quality Christian education. We ask for your guidance as a task force of WELS and ELS schools, Jesus Cares Ministries, and Christian Educators for Special Education meets to discuss how to enhance special education in our schools to better serve learners who struggle in academics or behavior. May the resources they develop support students, teachers, and administrators. Amen.

    VERSE OF THE MONTH

This year’s Spiritual Growth Plan focuses on prayer. Ponder a verse and a comment on the blessing of prayer from your Spiritual Growth Committee: Romans 8:26 “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” Even our feeble attempts at prayer are backed by the guarantee that the Holy Spirit knows our hearts and speaks prayers on our behalf.

    From the Board of Stewardship

When things start possessing us, God is moved to the periphery, and things we want to possess prohibit our spiritual growth.  Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  Is there truth in the following? Things we may earnestly pursue and believe we need for our welfare, once attained, turn out to be the cause of growing emptiness. Dear Lord, Bless me with true godly contentment and a growing desire for more and more of You and Your Word. Amen.
