    Sunday School Visitation Day

Our Sunday School begins again on Sept. 9.  All S.S. parents are invited to greet their child’s teacher during the last portion of our first SS day by stopping at the classroom at 10 o’clock. This will also give you a few moments to complete some brief paper work and meet other parents. We hope all our SS parents can make it.

SENIOR ADULT BIBLE STUDY Gospel of John

In our study of John’s gospel, we will take a journey through the life of Jesus. John offers perhaps the clearest reason why the Holy Spirit has given us these inspired writings: “…these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).  We’ll apply our Savior’s teachings to our own lives throughout the study. The class will be taught by Staff Minister Hering in the Church Office Classroom on Tuesdays at 10:30 am, beginning September18th and continuing through November 20th. (more…)

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The storm crashed around the house. Lightning flashed, thunder roared, hail pounded against the windows. And then the power went out. The family huddled in darkness, fearing that the fierce winds would demolish their home. When morning came, they inspected the damages and prepared for the day. Breakfast? No power meant no hot coffee, no warm toast. The air was unbearably hot. No power meant no air conditioning. How had the rest of the city fared? No power meant no radio or TV to catch the news. No power to begin the ordinary routines of the day.

When Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, His disciples were without power. In fear and dismay, they deserted Him and ran. After His resurrection, Jesus met with them. He spoke to them, and their fears dissolved. They believed His words, and power was restored – power from the Holy Spirit. Electric power outages are to be expected now and then, but never will we experience an outage of Spirit power. This is Jesus’ promise to us, His disciples of the twenty-first century.

Lutheran Schools – Savior God, in love you have shared a simple, powerful truth with each of us—that you love us and have already forgiven us! Thank you for bringing us to a knowledge of this saving truth through your Son, Jesus. As students return to their classrooms this fall, we humbly ask you to accompany them with your truth. Let their learning lead to many benefits for their lives and a better appreciation of you, their God. Let their thirst for knowledge remain in its proper place—never replacing you. Preserve their faith. Guide their daily decisions. Allow them to “grow in the grace and knowledge” their Savior. In his name we ask this, Amen.

Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. Proverbs 16:20
There are days when we may just want to stay in bed and pull the covers over our heads to keep the world out. Perhaps the job, finances, or ill health — a loved one’s or our own — has become overwhelming. For now, that concern has become too much for us to handle. We trust in God’s Word and know He will help us when fear and discouragement come our way. But that trust may become a little shaky when we want the problem solved in our time, not God’s. We want it fixed now!Ah, but Proverbs 16:20 says, … blessed is he who trusts. God’s blessings come from His Word as the gift of faith. We receive them in different ways — through a friend, by receiving a promotion, or in any of the countless other gifts He showers upon us. With patient trust we wait for God to act, and we pray for wisdom to recognize His blessings.Lutheran Schools – Savior God, in love you have shared a simple, powerful truth with each of us—that you love us and have already forgiven us! ADULT BIBLE STUDY – Jesus Lives in Us

July 15 to September 2.  All too often we’re disappointed in what the world has to offer yet we seem to forget that ONE person lived up to everything his family needed.  Jesus came into our world to fix it… and us!  He came to join us in our humanity to give us hope and a future, and in reality he himself and his life is the power source that we often forget to draw upon.  Quietly, and still forcibly, Jesus comes to each believer to bring truth and love; direction and purpose; answers to every question in life.  All over Scripture the person of Jesus comes to give life, and the longer we linger with him, the fuller our lives become.  Join us for an exploration of how a deeper relationship with Jesus puts everything into perspective.

SUMMER SERMON SERIES – Let the Lord’s Leader Listen – June 24 to September 2.

Few leaders leave a legacy like King David, who has been called the Great King and Giant Slayer.  David was a flawed man, desperately in need of forgiveness –like all of us.  David was a faith-filled follower of the Lord, blessed with a heart of passion and wisdom.  He sang the songs of a shepherd king from his youth until his grave.  He sought God’s will and as Israel’s leader instilled God’s way.  Even in his fumbling and failures, he longed for the presence and power of the God to whom he’d gladly give all glory.  David is a remarkable study in man’s weakness presented alongside God’s strength and God’s saving grace.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9a

The Apostle Paul wrote of having an unnamed affliction that caused him ongoing pain. He referred to it as a thorn in my flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7b NIV) and he repeatedly asked God to take away this pain. The Lord did not do so. Instead, His response to Paul was, “My grace is sufficient for you …” (2 Corinthians 12:9b).

God’s grace was enough for Paul and it is big enough for us, too. Because of His undeserved love, we have forgiveness of sins and a place in heaven. We don’t have to wait for God’s grace, for we have received it through our trust in Jesus. We, like Paul, are gifted with God’s amazing grace. This is an important reminder when we are hurting. The same One Who made sure that we have access to eternal life through Jesus gives us His grace to enable us to handle the heartaches, pains, and hurts we will encounter on this side of heaven.

Cameroon – O Lamb of God who has purchased people for God from every tribe, language, people, and nation, you hold history in your hands. We ask you to watch over our fellow Christians in the Lutheran Church of Cameroon during the country’s civil war. Although our expatriate missionaries have had to leave, we pray that you would continue to bless the movement of the gospel there as national pastors and members proclaim it. If it is your will, bring the current conflict to an end soon so that peace may prevail and the gospel be shared with more people. We pray this trusting your plan and your promise. Amen. (more…)

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16

It is easy to get discouraged when we hurt. Simply having someone tell us to “hang in there” or “keep a stiff upper lip” is not enough. We may want to be strong, but when the pain comes it can overwhelm us. How can we not lose heart when we feel like we are wasting away?

Paul advised the Corinthian believers to be renewed daily. We, too, can take advantage of the ways in which God makes His grace available.

Remember Baptism. God is at work claiming us as His dearly loved children, putting His name on us, and washing away our sins. Spend time in His Word. Reflect on the promise and the message of forgiveness, life, and salvation that Jesus accomplished for everyone. Receive His love and mercy in the Lord’s Supper. In this meal Jesus gives us His body and blood that were offered on the cross, assuring us of the forgiveness and acceptance He earned for us. God’s strength is available to us, and His desire is for us to be renewed in it.

Ecuador – Our Savior God, who wants all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, go with Missionaries Strackbein and Schulte as they begin work in Ecuador. We thank you for blessing the gospel of Jesus already shared through social media. Help the mission team to find a place to house a Christian training center. In this grace-starved country, grant that they may quickly get to the work of leading people into the saving truths of God’s Word; through Christ, our Lord.  Amen. (more…)

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” John 6:51

A healthy lifestyle cannot be based on exercise alone. Not too many people would be inclined to eat a bag of chips or a pound of chocolate and then go for a run. Besides the stomachache that would slow you down, it doesn’t make sense to eat unhealthy food while trying to get healthy.

So what is the healthiest, most nourishing, and satisfying food we can eat? No fruit, vegetable, or even Greek yogurt can compare to the food God offers through His Son, Jesus Christ. This food is not the bread and fish Jesus used to feed the five thousand (Matthew 14:13-21), or the breakfast He prepared for His disciples after His resurrection (John 21:1-14).

The life-sustaining food God gives us is Jesus Himself. Jesus said “I am the living bread” (John 6:51a). In the Sacrament of the Altar, believers have the opportunity to partake of this food while receiving the benefits of the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Christ’s body and blood sacrificed and given to us will not only give us strength to live a new earthly life, but it will continue to sustain us on through eternity.

Vietnam – Jesus, Head of the Church, thank you that your gospel is reaching an increasing number of people in Vietnam. Bless the work of the national pastors and evangelists—and the WELS missionaries supporting them. May your Holy Spirit guide the work which will result in a seminary for training there. Thank you for international connections that allow Christians in one country to support ministry to loved ones in another. May these opportunities result in even more of your children learning about your grace. Amen. (more…)
