Walk with Jesus – His Last Week on Earth – February 19 to April 9

Adult Sunday Morning Study at 9:15am.   During Lent this year we will reconstruct the final days of our Lord among us.  Eight Gospel studies will enable us to relive with him each day, from the triumphal entry to the empty tomb.  En route, we’ll witness the last meal with his disciples, his trial, his suffering and crucifixion, and his resurrection.  The Gospel narratives are brisk through his three year ministry but all four eye witnesses “slowed the camera down” during Holy Week to show how intentional his passion was.  He knew he was going to be persecuted – smitten, stricken and afflicted – yet he walked the path to cross with confident faith and consummate love.  This chronology of his last week on earth will remind us why “believing you may have life in his name.”  (John 20:31)

THINKING AHEAD FOR LENT By Rejection  (Matthew 23:37)

Jesus came from humble beginnings, of low social status.  In those days the Jewish people were like the world today in that they had an upper class of the rich and educated.  Similarly, the religious leaders were financially well off (perhaps through corruption?) and highly educated.  They had taken on a “haughty air” about them in the fashion of their Roman conquerors.  One reason was because they along with their kings were just puppets who co-operated with their overlords, for their own advancement.  That’s why this humble carpenter was not well received by the scribes and Pharisees when he began to teach the gospel of peace, reverently and humbly, but with authority even casting out demons and healing the sick.  He was too much for them, but just right for us. THINKING AHEAD FOR LENT By Temptation (Matthew 4:1-11)

He chose to be made like us in all things.  It is of utmost importance to note that, although Jesus was in fact, born into this world in a body just like ours (that knew fear, anxiety, sadness and joy) yet he was still perfect, without sin.  The Holy Spirit reveals in the Word that Jesus had to be born in a human body to be tempted as we are.  The Word is clear, giving us hope that we will be fully delivered from our shame, our pain, our wounds – delivered out of temptation just as we have been freed from the consequence of sin by our association with him. Sometimes simply earthly trinkets can create happiness in our lives. And, of course, they can come and go. But that which has value far beyond our temporal gifts is of eternal worth. May we never take those things for granted, and join with the Apostle Paul in his prayer to the Ephesians:

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you (us) with all power through his Spirit…that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ… (Eph. 3)

“And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it.” Proverbs 8:32-33

What noises are interfering with my time for listening to God?

“Turn. That. Thing. Down!” came Dad’s sharp words when the radio blared. “Change the channel! Now!” was Mom’s direction when the TV show was too steamy for young minds. Today’s noises come from more sources — movies, video games, and social media. Some noises are so loud they even cause ear damage. How can the world’s noises be turned off before they cause even more damage: heart and mind damage?

God’s instruction is … listen to me (Proverbs 8:32). He directs His people to think of … whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable…(Philippians 4:8b). When these good things fill hearts and minds, God promises His blessings. … the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 4:7). Who Can Be Trusted?

Peter said,[…] “Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” […] And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.  (Acts 5:4b, 11 )

It happens all too often. Public officials get elected, promoting squeaky-clean images and touting honorable lives. Then they get caught in a scandal. They try to cover it up. They deny any knowledge or involvement, but evidence proves otherwise. They have lied to the people. They have lied to God. The community has been betrayed. The people are left wondering, “What is the truth? Who can be trusted?”  (more…)

… there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.  (Proverbs 18:24b )

Friendships come in many forms: school friendships, childhood friendships, multi-generational friendships, work friendships. Some friendships are new; others remain solid after many years.

We see some friends almost daily while others are miles away. How wonderful it is to have a friend in whom we have complete trust. One who forgives us, encourages us, and loves us – warts and all. Our deepest friendships are those that share a mutual faith in Christ. What a blessing to have a friend who prays for us and shares God’s Word with us! These relationships are treasured gifts from our Savior Jesus Who is our truest friend. (more…)
